It tells the story of Grange, a poor sharecropper who seeks more out of life by deserting his debts and his family to make a life for himself up North. It also tells the story of his son, Brownfield, who follows in his footsteps. Unfulfilled, Grange returns to his roots in Georgia only to find out his son was imprisoned for the murder of his wife. As the new guardian of his grandchild, he’s offered a brand new chance to free himself from bondage.
